Petition for municipal street food vendor permits for businesses offering healthy mobile food options Petition

PETITION CAN BE FOUND HERE:  gopetition.com

Published by el gastronomo vagabundo on Sep 08, 2010
Target: Ontario Municipal Governments
Region: Canada

Background (Preamble):
Ontarians have a lot of options when it comes to street food. Poutine with bacon, or poutine with extra cheese? Italian sausage, or Polish sausage? Coke, or Pepsi?

Unfortunately, if you care about your health and don’t want to eat cooked-from-frozen processed foods, you’re out of luck on the streets of Ontario. Although Toronto’s heavily regulated ‘à la Carte’ program launched in 2008, only six vendors have survived the first two years of the program, and there’s no telling what the end result will be for the vendors’ bottom line, or street food in general.

Vancouver’s ‘2010 Street Food Experiment’ is in its second year, with vendor permit lottery winners “The Roaming Dragon” leading the charge, offering healthy pan-Asian inspired street food. The people of Vancouver are satisfying their voracious hunger for healthy, accessible street food in a way that Ontarians can only dream of. Some Ontario municipalities have placed moratoria on their street vendor permits, with chip trucks and hot dog carts holding the lion’s share of existing permits, and justifiably not wanting to give them up to new businesses. Other municipalities simply don’t offer street food permits for prospective vendors at all.

Help persuade local and provincial lawmakers to revise current restrictive vending ordinances that hinder the flourishing of street food culture, and to implement a regulatory system that encourages culinary entrepreneurship and accessible food options.

Help jump start a thriving urban street food scene that brings casual, affordable, delicious food options to our streets and promotes our cities as food culture destinations. Spread the word about the integral role street vendors could play in rejuvenating the life and economy of Ontario municipalities through the creation of viable business opportunities and jobs for Ontarians.

Petition:
We, the undersigned, wish to see healthier street food options made available on public property through the municipal administration of additional street food vendor permits for businesses offering healthy mobile food options.

Avaaz - Poisoning Canada's water

An American hedge fund is about to break ground on a massive mining project that could poison a million people's drinking water and the headwaters for five major rivers. They want to create an open pit deeper than Niagara Falls and decimate thousands of acres of lush farmland -- and we have 4 days to stop them.

For years, Highland Companies deceived Ontario residents, posing as a potato farming company and quietly buying up thousands of acres of land from local farmers. Then, it was suddenly revealed that the massive plot of farmland would be converted into a limestone quarry -- a 2300 acre pit so deep it would seriously interfere with the ground water system in the region. But, in order to start digging, Highland must win approval from Minister of Natural Resources Linda Jeffrey.

Jeffrey is taking 4 more days to consider public opinion on this quarry before making her decision. We can deliver an overwhelming wave of opposition to Highland's destructive plan. Sign the petition, forward it to everyone and it will be submitted to Jeffrey before the consultation period ends.

Highland's mega-quarry is smack dab in the middle of farmland the whole country depends on for food production. If built, it could poison clean ground water that feeds the lakes and rivers many Canadians use for drinking water. The quarry would require over seven thousand trucks to transport limestone each and every day, upping carbon emissions and requiring new roads to handle the exploding traffic -- further destroying the natural habitat of hundreds of species of animals. The city-sized pit would scar the land long after the mining was finished.

But, residents and environmental activists are working hard to oppose the quarry's license -- even the Environment Minister has called for further assessments. Ontario's Liberal government faces a tough re-election fight in October and Liberal Minister Linda Jeffrey is concerned about public opinion in these key months before votes are cast. A national call will put pressure on Jeffrey and her party to stand up for Canada's environment, its farmers and the fresh water many Canadians depend on for survival.

Let's bring the voice of all Canadians to Ontario's Minister of Natural Resources and force her to kill Highland's plan for environmental destruction. Sign the petition and then forward widely.

Words by Sarah Crawford, photos by John Gundy
To the thousands of attendees from over 150 countries, ‘Terra Madre’ is understood to be about more than the conference itself; the words connote the broad and many would say thrilling shared experience of being in Turin, connecting with like-minded people from around the world, the sensory delights of the massive Salone del Gusto, the gatherings – spontaneous and planned – of new friends, long-time colleagues, locals, and encounters with the rock stars of the Italian and international Slow Food movement.

Paraprosdokian - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jump to: navigation, search

A paraprosdokian (from Greek "παρα-", meaning "beyond" and "προσδοκία", meaning "expectation") is a figure of speech in which the latter part of a sentence or phrase is surprising or unexpected in a way that causes the reader or listener to reframe or reinterpret the first part. It is frequently used for humorous or dramatic effect, sometimes producing an anticlimax. For this reason, it is extremely popular among comedians and satirists.

Some paraprosdokians not only change the meaning of an early phrase, but also play on the double meaning of a particular word, creating a syllepsis.

Stadtlander Dinner for Pakistan « Good Food Revolution

Media_httpgoodfoodrev_doezd

A behind the scenes look at how a bountiful Ontario harvest inspired: a chef to raise money for Pakistan; a truly beautiful meal; the generosity of everyone in the room toward those in need. 100 percent of the proceeds would go to Médecins Sans Frontières Pakistan Floods Relief Fund. (a.k.a. Doctors Without Borders or ‘MSF’).

Nightmare almost comes true! Missed by that much.

I was on my back stoop having a smoke and planning my day in the garden when a bomb exploded over my head. My nightmare was comming true.

I love the 100 year old Norway Maple that stands at the end of our Toronto garden. I must admit that I have had nightmares of our house being crushed one storming night.

Boom, Crack, I look up as my body turns instinctualy and dives into the house, to see the largest of three main trunks falling into the garden.

It is quiet now but for the hiss of a leaking propane tank. The room is bathed in an eary green light filtering through the leaves that now cover the sunroom windows.

So no gardening today, no delivery of photographs to clients or World Cup football untill Rogers repairs my cable and Internet and no phone calls.
Sounds like an old time Sunday.
Maybe I should go to church?
